Grade 2:

• Geometry and Spatial Sense - Patterning and Algebra

  • Overall Expectation:

    •  compose and decompose common two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional figures;

      • identify,describe,extend,and create repeating patterns;​

  • Specific Expectations:

    •  identify and describe common two- dimensional shapes (e.g.,circles,triangles, rectangles, squares) and sort and classify them by their attributes (e.g., colour; size; texture; number of sides), using concrete materials and pictorial representations (e.g.,“I put all the triangles in one group. Some are long and skinny, and some are short and fat, but they all have three sides.”);

    • represent a given repeating pattern in a variety of ways (e.g., pictures, actions, colours, sounds, numbers, letters) (Sample problem:Make an ABA, ABA, ABA pattern using actions like clapping or tapping.).

  • Activity Idea:

    •  To draw your superhero picture you had to use a lot of different shapes. On a piece of paper draw three of the shapes you used, and write their names beside them.

    • Next, use those shapes to draw the following patterns with your shapes:

      • ABCABC

      • ABABABA

      • AABBAABB

    • Extend each pattern for 8 rounds.

    • Finally, find objects around your house to see if you can create a pattern using them.

Grade 3:

• Writing

  • Overall Expectation:

    •  recognize a variety of text forms, text features, and stylistic elements and demonstrate understanding of how they help communicate meaning;

  • Specific Expectations:

    •  identify and describe the characteristics of a variety of text forms, with a focus on literary texts such as a fable or adventure story (e.g., plot development, characters, setting), graphic texts such as a comic book (e.g., speech bubbles, illus- trations, captions), and informational texts such as a nature magazine (e.g., table of contents, diagrams, photographs, labels, captions)

  • Activity Idea:

    • Superheroes have all sorts of different powers. What power did the superhero in your drawing have? What about if you were a superhero - what power would you have?

    • Using the superhero you created, write a comic strip. Comic strips use speech bubbles to identify who is speaking on each page - just like the way the BOOM is drawn on your page.

    • In your comic strip use speech bubbles to write all of your dialogue.

Grade 5:

• Geometry and Spatial Sense

  • Overall Expectation:

    • Identify and classify two-dimensional shapes by side and angle properties, and compare and sort three-dimensional figures;

  • Specific Expectations:

    •  distinguish among prisms, right prisms, pyramids, and other three-dimensional figures;

  • Activity Idea:

    • To create your superhero comic art you used a variety of 2 dimensional shapes. What shapes did you use to create the city? Draw and label them on a piece of paper.

    • Next, turn all of the 2 dimensional shapes that you used into 3 dimensional prisms. Do this by drawing them on a piece of paper.

    • Once you have created your 3 dimensional shapes describe each prism. How many sides does it have? How many vertices does it have? How else might you describe each prism?
